Description:	This research arises from the need to know the Colombian energy sector, its importance in the economic activity of the country and the positive and negative effects that this production has. The study addresses the economic, production and environmental aspects of the sector. According to the Energy Mining Planning Unit (UPME) in 2017, the country had a net effective capacity of 16,706 Megawatts (MW), 69.92% is generated by hydroelectric plants, followed by 20.62%, by the thermal power plants that work through the combustion of gas and coal. From the environmental point of view, it is very important that hydroelectric power production relies on the use of coal, generating negative externalities related to the management of the environment, especially when the policies to implement clean technologies or unconventional sources of energy are incipient in the country. With the development of this project, the sector's detailed knowledge is contributed significantly as the first step in understanding the strategies that public policy plans to implement for the development of efficiency and sustainability conditions in the generation of electricity. Esta investigación surge de la necesidad de conocer el sector energético colombiano, su importancia en la actividad económica del país y los efectos positivos y negativos que tiene esta producción. El estudio aborda los aspectos económicos, de producción y ambientales del sector. De acuerdo la Unidad de Planeación Minero Energético (UPME) en 2017, el país contaba con una capacidad efectiva neta de 16.706 Megavatios. (MW), un 69.92% es generada por las centrales hidroeléctricas, seguido con un 20,62% , por las centrales térmicas que funciona mediante la combustión de gas y carbón. Es muy relevante desde lo ambiental, que la producción energética de las hidroeléctricas descansa en el uso de carbón generando externalidades negativas referidas al manejo del ambiente, máxime cuando las políticas para implementar tecnologías limpias o fuentes no convencionales de energía son incipientes en el País. Con el desarrollo de este proyecto se aporta de manera significativa al conocimiento detallado del sector como primer paso para comprender las estrategias que desde la política pública se planean implementar para el desarrollo de condiciones de eficiencia y sostenibilidad en la generación de energía eléctrica.
