dc.description.abstractEste documento es el resultado de un ejercicio de investigación formativa, desarrollado como opción de grado, que permitió reflexionar sobre la práctica pedagógica y la investigación educativa. El estudio se llevó a cabo en la Universidad Nacional Abierta y a Distancia (UNAD), trabajando con estudiantes y egresados con discapacidad visual (ceguera y baja visión). El objetivo general fue fortalecer las habilidades comunicativas en el idioma inglés de los estudiantes con discapacidad visual de la UNAD, a través de la optimización técnica y el manejo avanzado del lector de pantalla durante el primer semestre del año 2026, utilizando un enfoque cualitativo y de investigación-acción en el que se puso en juego la optimización técnica del lector de pantalla, reconociendo sus efectos en la autonomía y en la apropiación del aprendizaje por parte de los participantes. A partir de este ejercicio investigativo, se concluyó que la optimización técnica del lector de pantalla contribuye de manera significativa al fortalecimiento de las habilidades comunicativas en inglés, al mejorar el acceso a los contenidos y favorecer procesos de aprendizaje más autónomos en estudiantes con discapacidad visual

dc.description.abstractenglishThis study explores the impact of screen reader optimization on the development of English communicative skills among visually impaired students in a virtual higher education context. The research was conducted with students and graduates with blindness and low vision at the Universidad Nacional Abierta y a Distancia (UNAD). A qualitative action-research approach was adopted to examine participants’ initial use of assistive technology and to implement a pedagogical intervention focused on improving its technical configuration for bilingual learning. Data were collected through interviews, observation records, and a survey. The results showed that participants initially relied on basic configurations, which limited their comprehension of English content, particularly in listening and reading. After the intervention, improvements were observed in the technical use of screen readers and in participants’ engagement with English materials, as well as a gradual increase in learning autonomy. Despite some remaining challenges, the findings highlight the relevance of integrating technical training in assistive technologies as part of inclusive educational practices to enhance accessibility and support language learning processes.
