La microbiota es una herramienta fundamental para el desempeño optimo del sistema gastrointestinal, tanto para funciones fisiológicas como mecanismos inmunológicos, siendo estos últimos un sitio diana en posibles tratamientos si se conoce plenamente su funcionamiento y regulación. Se sabe que la microbiota desde que inicia su colonización en el huésped regula la respuesta inmune durante toda la vida del individuo y un cambio desfavorable en esta puede ocasionar daños en la simbiosis desfavoreciendo a las dos partes, No obstante es importante reconocer que durante todo el proceso de maduración de un individuo es casi inevitable que el buen estado de la microbiota se mantenga, cuando esta se ve afectada ( ya sea por periodos largos o cortos de tiempo ) existen diversas formas de reestablecerla y uno de ellas es el uso de probioticos.
